Last week, Apera AI CEO Sina Afrooze and VP Engineering Jamie Westhall hosted "The $1 Trillion Bottleneck: Scaling Autonomous Bin Picking," a live session on why bin picking remains the last manual station on most otherwise automated lines, and what it takes to finally automate it.

Nearly 190 manufacturing and automation leaders registered, from Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive suppliers to OEMs, integrators, and plant operations teams. Along the way, we polled the live audience twice. The results are some of the clearest data we have seen on where automation buyers actually stand today, and they are worth sharing on their own.

Poll 1: It Is Not One Bottleneck, It Is All of Them

We asked attendees the most direct question we could: what is your biggest bottleneck right now in automation projects? The answers broke down like this:

  • 48% said "all of the above, it's all connected"
  • 20% pointed to vision expertise and integration complexity
  • 16% said unproven results until go-live, the risk of not knowing if it will work until it is already on the floor
  • 9% said the cost and ROI math simply does not work
  • 7% pointed to deployment timelines that run too long

Nearly half the room refused to pick just one answer, and that is the finding. Bin picking has not stayed manual because manufacturers do not want to automate it. It has stayed manual because every path to automating it, vision expertise, integration timeline, upfront risk, and cost, has historically failed at the same time. Fix one and the other three are still waiting for you.

Poll 2: The Market Is Already Moving Toward Productized Automation

The second poll was designed to read intent, not just opinion. We asked which automation model best aligns with their current five-year strategy:

  • 42% said a hybrid approach, depending on the application
  • 30% said productized automation with rapid deployment, prioritizing speed and certainty
  • 15% said custom per-site integration, prioritizing maximum flexibility
  • 12% said they are not automating this task right now

Three out of every four attendees are already planning around some version of faster, more predictable deployment, whether that is a full productized model or a hybrid approach that leans on one where it counts.

Custom, fully bespoke integration, the model that has defined bin picking for decades, is now the minority position among the people actually setting automation strategy.
